Degree Days concept
Degree days are not a new idea as the original concept was put forward about 100 years ago for use in horticulture. Nowadays, however, by far the largest use of degree days is for building heating purposes, for which they have been used in Britain for about 50 years. Degree days have become especially important since it has been shown how valuable they are in monitoring the benefits of energy saving measures in buildings, particularly now that the very large amounts of energy that could be saved in buildings have been recognised.

By utilising daily degree day data alongside a predetermined constant denoting the power needed for a 1-degree Celsius temperature change, you can estimate the daily average power consumption for heating or cooling. This process involves collecting daily heating or cooling degree day information to track temperature variations relative to a specified base temperature. With the base temperature defined and the constant in place, calculations can be made to estimate the average power usage. This estimation can be applied to predict future power needs, aiding in energy management and resource planning based on expected degree day data. Continuous monitoring of actual energy consumption allows for fine-tuning of estimates and identification of areas for energy efficiency improvements. Seasonal analyses can be conducted to optimise heating or cooling systems, ultimately supporting data-driven decisions for energy management and cost reduction.
How does it work?
DegreeDays.io provides users with an intuitive interface that requires a postcode, base temperature and date range. We use this information to accurately calculate heating or cooling degree days for the full date range down to the hour using our own internal UK weather database and use weather data from the closest weather station to the supplied postcode
When the temperature maintained inside is higher than the temperature outside, any building will spontaneously lose heat.
The Degree Days calculator shows the heating base temperature, the cooling base temperature and the opportunity to add in a specific time frame or postcode.
